Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer with SMCGS

Volunteer! There’s no better way to get to know your genealogist community than by working on a project together. SMCGS offers many volunteer opportunities for helping our society support genealogists and preserve local records for the greater good.

Please consider joining the many members who already find that giving their time and talent to support SMCGS a rewarding experience.  There are many opportunities to volunteer from active, ongoing commitments to short or one time activities but always they are opportunities to work with others who share your passion for genealogy.

The reason we are able to provide educational programs and resources, have fabulous events, interesting monthly meetings, and maintain a great library as well as expanding our online resources is because of volunteers – like you - who share their time and talents.

We would love to have you join us. Please take a look at these basic areas where volunteers are always needed and what appeals to you. Questions? Contact the SMCGS President.

Join our teams!!

Education Team -  The education team is the one who plans (and gets to decide on) all our monthly meetings, workshops, and seminars.

  • Have you heard any good speakers lately?
  • Do you have a topic for a workshop?  Your suggestions can actually become our next presentation!
  • Or perhaps YOU have a topic you'd like to present to a small group or monthly meeting.

The team meets once a month via Zoom to discuss ideas.  Come and let your voice be heard.

Library Team –  SMCGS has moved to the San Mateo Public Library!  Can you help with:

  • Restocking and organizing the shelves?
  • Help with changing displays on our bulletin board?
  • Partnering with an experienced genealogist to answer question for patrons?
  • Are you a member of DAR?  Mayflower?  Local or state historical societies?
  • We especially need volunteers with experience researching areas which are historically less well documented.

Library volunteers may also answer questions  which come in through our website research page using our San Mateo collections.  Shifts are usually a couple of hours once or twice a month.

Membership Team - This team is our outreach to members.  We develop welcome packs, help new members fill out their profiles, and let them know about opportunities within the society.  Have you been doing genealogy for a while? Perhaps you can help a "newbie".  Or if you are one yourself - this is the best way to get involved in genealogy!

Technology Team - Do you like technology?  So do our webmasters!  We can show you how to add text and photos to our webpages, send messages, schedule events, and more using our Wild Apricot platform.

Writers – We welcome contributions to the following:

  • Newsletter/e-news
  • Proofreading articles
  • Blog
  • Sharing stories competition held annually.
  • First families

If you are interested in any of these areas or in volunteering in any another way, please contact the SMCGS President.
